Installation is Key
The superior performance of Gabion Mattresses is only fully realized with correct installation. Proper techniques ensure stability, longevity, and the desired erosion control outcome. This guide walks you through a professional, step-by-step installation process.
Pre-Installation Checklist
*Site Prep: Clear, grade, and compact the subgrade. Remove any sharp objects that could damage the PVC coating (if used).
*Materials & Tools: Mattress units, lacing wire, wire cutters, pliers, lace tensioners, and approved stone fill (size should be 1.5 times the mesh aperture).
The 7-Step Installation Process
1:Positioning & Deployment: Place the bundled mattresses on the prepared surface and unfold them.
2:Assembly & Connecting: Securely lace adjacent mattress units together along their selvedge edges to form a continuous, monolithic lining.
3:Stone Placement: Fill the mattresses in layers (approx. 1/3 at a time). Use machinery for efficiency but avoid dropping rocks from great heights.
4:Ensuring a Level Surface: Hand-place stones near the exposed surface to achieve a neat, compact, and uniform finis5:Installing Tie Wires: As you fill, install tie wires between the upper and lower faces of the mattress to prevent bulging.
6:Lacing the Lid: Once filled slightly above the top to allow for settlement, place the lid and securely lace it to all sides and diaphragms. This is a critical step.
7:Post-Installation Check: After completion, conduct a visual inspection and monitor the structure, especially after significant rain events.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
*Mistake: Using undersized stone fill. (Leads to loss of material and structural weakening).
*Mistake:Overfilling cells in a single lift. (Causes distortion and stress on the mesh).
*Mistake: Inadequate lacing of lids and connections. (Compromises structural unity).
